by Magnum Photographers

When:

May 21 - Jun 26 2020

Where:

Online

Magnum Photos is proud to present its first interactive online masterclass led by Jonas Bendiksen and Bieke Depoorter. This course will equip you to successfully research, fund and photograph a documentary project. We will guide you through the complex editing process and the photographers will share insights of their own practise. Small assignments will be given to participants throughout the course.

This course combines teachings on documentary photography by Bendiksen and Depoorter with aspects of our successful professional practice workshops developed over the past seven years. We will create an informal and supportive space where participants can focus on their personal photographic development while meeting experts from the photographic industry, giving behind-the-scenes tips and practical advice on how to work and succeed in their area of expertise.

The sessions will include lectures on how to develop a story, practical exercises on editing, writing, guidance on how to get funding, as well as lectures by top photo editors, book publishers, commercial agents and cultural institutions.

If you have an incomplete project, an unedited archive, or you are about to embark on a project but are not sure where to start, then this course is for you.

Jonas Bendiksen and Bieke Depoorter, and Magnum Photos staff, will personally support each participant throughout the class. Weekly lectures, one-to-ones and exercises will be sent in advance to best prepare you before each lecture.

One of the most valuable aspects of our live workshops are the bonds created between students - some have gone on to collaborate together on projects, started photography collectives, or simply made new friends. This is something we want to replicate online, where each of you will have the chance to introduce yourself and your work to your fellow students, and organise regular online hangouts to allow participants to share and support each other.

At the end of the course, an online slideshow showcasing the participants’ work will be made accessible on the Magnum website and celebrated during a virtual private view open to friends and family, Magnum staff and guests from our industry network.

This workshop offers:

• Lectures, one-to-ones, assignments from Magnum photographers.
• Practical advice and lectures from industry speakers about their specific area of expertise
• Group portfolio reviews
• Individual portfolio reviews
• Lessons on editing, research and funding
• Your work featured on the Magnum website at the end of the course
