On Thursday, September 26th, 2019, Jacques Chirac passed away, aged 86. Starting his career in Corrèze, he became Mayor of Paris in 1977 and distinguished himself by implementing an innovative model of urban management. As the fifth President of the French Republic (1995-2007), he will be remembered as an outspoken propeller for intercultural dialogue, leaving the Musée du Quai Branly as a legacy. In 2002, Jacques Chirac defeated far-right leader Jean-Marie Le Pen in the second round of the presidential elections. During his last presidential term, he repeatedly refused involvement in the 2003 American-led Iraq intervention.
