Simone Veil: 1927-2017
July 5, 2017
by Magnum Photographers
Simone Veil, an iconic French politician and Holocaust survivor, passed away on June 30th, 2017, at the age of 89. Sent to Auschwitz as a teenager, she lost both of her parents and many other family members to the gas chambers. Despite a tragic childhood, she rose to become a formidable politician and passionate advocate for Europe. She served as the Minister of Health from 1974 to 1979, during which she successfully fought to expand access to contraception for women, and to legalize abortion in France, a landmark achievement. She was then voted the first President of the European Parliament, a position she held until 1982.
